Ayvalik - The proud capital of Turkish olive oil industry. Local families that have been involved with olive oil making for generations still use traditional methods for pressing the olives. Native people of Ayvalik use only olive oil in all their cooking, even when making cakes. The sleepy and picturesque back streets of the city are full of several 18th and 19th C houses that were built by the local pinkish / yellowish volcanic stone. Sandy beaches that surround the city are known for their calm waters. Frequented by Turkish travelers in summer months, not discovered much by the international travelers yet.
