rafting in the Coruh River
A week long rafting adventure in the Coruh River known as one of the fastest rivers in the world with many grade 5 rapids.
In this adventure you will discover the unique natural environment, and the incredible geography of the Coruh Valley. The river flows through spectacular canyons and fertile valleys, and a dramatic background of rugged mountains. The cultural activities of the locals we may encounter are javelin contests, a traditional type of polo, water buffalo wrestling, and local folk dances.
During this adrenalin rush, the level of difficulty may go up to grade 5. In the spring months the river gets higher with snow water and provides grade 4 to 5 rafting. It will definitely get you wet! If you like a more relaxed pace, July is more suitable as the water level decreases. Novice paddlers are welcome, but you need to be a confident swimmer as almost anyone gets a dip in the water now and then. We will be rafting for 4 - 5 hours every day, and take time to explore the nature, socialize with the locals, and relax in the evenings.
Our paddle-boats carry 8 people plus an expert guide that knows the river like the back of his hand. Each rafter has a paddle and help power and steer under the command of the guide. Experienced white water kayakers can join the adventure.
We provide all camping and rafting gear. Participants need to bring their own sleeping bags. Camping equipment are carried by srm staff who will shadow the adventurers (by land!).
The camp site will be set before the rafters arrive, and our cook will prepare the food. You should not look for luxury, as we will be in the middle of wilderness. You will be staying at camps, and village pensions.
8 days, 6 full days of rafting, conducted on June and July. Adventure begins in Erzurum, and ends in the province of Artvin. Tour can be connected with other special interest and adventure, or regional tours, and if desired, a 4 days Macahel region hike can be added to the program.
itinerary details
day 1 - Erzurum --- Arrive in Erzurum. Check in at the hotel. Orientation, free time.
day 2 - Erzurum - Ispir - Camliyamac --- Early in the morning, we drive to Ispir (3600 ft.) to start our adventure. After testing and putting on our gear, we will lower our rafts and get our feet wet. The Coruh river will welcome us with all its might. We will paddle through a deep granite gorge towards the Camliyamac (2700 ft.). Approximately 20 miles of paddling.
day 3 - Camliyamac - Koprugoren --- We will paddle approximately 30 miles with a number of grade 5 rapids, along with many 3 and 4 and watch spectacular scenery. By the village of Koprugoren, we will camp for the evening and enjoy fish from the river for dinner. After dinner, we will gather around the camp fire with the villagers and enjoy folk music and dancing.
day 4 - Koprugoren - Yusufeli --- Today, we will be paddling in the borders of the Kackar National Park. The Georgian heritage is dense in this part of the valley and we will have a chance to make a hike to some of the 10th century churches. In May and early June, the fruit orchards are blossoming and later in the summer you can eat the fruits! In Yusufeli (1500 ft.), we will stay in a village pension that is along the Barhal stream, one of the tributaries of Coruh.
day 5 - Yusufeli - Barhal - Yusufeli --- Early in the morning, we will drive to Barhal village to visit the ancient Georgian Church, after a cultural walk in the village, we will have picnic for lunch. Later, our vehicle will take us to Sarigol Lake to start rafting in the Barhal stream. Barhal is narrower and faster than Coruh and for sure will increase the arenalin river! After two hours of paddling, we will in the Coruh again. Overnight in the village pension.
day 6 - Yusufeli - Demirkent --- Today we will raft the most exhilarating rapids of the adventure through the Yusufeli Gorge, a roller coaster effect! The rade 4 - 5 rapids of this section hosted the World rafting Championship in 1993. Upon arrival to Demirkent, we will enjoy a camp dinner and rest.
day 7 & 8 - Demirkent - Narlik - Sirya Village --- In these two days, we will enjoy a rafting in a more relaxed pace with the spectacular scenery surrounding us. We will spend time with the locals and eat some of our meals with them. Our adventure ends in the Sirya village of Artvin province.
