Formula 1 Istanbul - 2005 Grand Prix
A first for Istanbul; the brand new Istanbul Park F1 circuit hosted the 14. race of the 2005 season. Kimi Raikkönen drove to victory in the Turkish Grand Prix ahead of Fernando Alonso, the championship leader.
Raikkönen's McLaren-Mercedes started on pole, but was beaten to the first turn by Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella. Raikkönen regained the lead on the next lap, and was never threatened again till the end of the race, reducing Alonso's lead to 24 points.
Renault pilot Fernando Alonso crossed the finish line second, passing McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya, as he made a late error towards the end of the race.
On a special event before the race, David Coulthard became the first F1 pilot to drive an F1 racing car over the Intercontinental Bosphorus Bridge. On July 17, Red Bull Racing Team pilot Coulthard started his engine by Dolmabahce Palace on the Bosphorus, crossed the bridge to the Asian side, and drove back to the palace for a press conference.
