regional Cappadocia
Looking at the map, you may not be able to see the term Cappadocia, since it is an old geographic name given to a wide region.
The unique rock formations are the result of a continuous erosion of volcanic ash and lava rocks. But Cappadocia is not just the rock formations. This is one of the few places that the long lasting traditions still shapes the lives of the people.
Tour starts in Ankara for easy flight connection to other destinations. City of Kayseri is 1 hour drive to the region (limited number of flights, from or connected via Istanbul), thus provide an alternative to Ankara.
Itinerary specifics are to be re-arranged if the tour starts from Kayseri. Please refer to special interest & adventure pages for hiking alternatives.
day 1 --- Arrive in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. After a brief orientation in the city, we drive to the ancient citadel for the 'Museum of Anatolian Civilizations' - a great introduction to Anatolian cultures. We take a stroll to see the district known as the inner citadel before we leave for Cappadocia.
En route, we will visit a 13th century Caravan Serai that served through the centuries as an inn for merchants and travelers on the Silk Road.
day 2 --- Unusual landscape and amazing rock formations, but as you will discover there is more to it. Here in Cappadocia we will get together with the locals on occasions and have a chance to listen to their side of the story.
Today we visit Göreme Open Air Museum and the late Byzantine churches carved in the rock. Also included on tour is the underground city of Kaymakli that was in the past a temporary shelter for the locals in times of danger and siege.
day 3 --- This morning we visit the Red Valley, and the pictureque Pasabag where you will observe some of the most spectacular fairy chimney formations. We will continue on to Avanos, a small town on the Red River famous for its traditional red clay pottery. In Zelve, you will be seeing some of the rock dwellings that were in use till the early 20th. century..
